The very first carbon aero wheelset, especially for the beach: Storm 4-Shore by 9thWave !

High rims are indispensable on racing bikes and high speeds are often achieved on the beach. But why does everyone still ride with low rims? Simple: The high rims that are used on the road are fast, but also often have an inner width of about 20 mm and that is narrow. Too narrow. And let that inner width ensure that in combination with beach tires you can create a larger support surface, making it easier to get through the soft parts.

Test 1,2,3! The ideal width and the ideal height?
That's why we went looking for the ideal beach wheels together with Dutch wheel manufacturer 9thWave . Of course, the hubs have to be well sealed against the salty seawater and brass nipples are used to prevent corrosion, but the most important thing for the ultimate beach rim? The width and height! But the wider the better? Our tests showed that a rim can also be too wide in combination with a beach tire.

The Storm 4-Shore rims have an inner width of 33.0mm, which allows you to ride with lower tire pressure without the tire 'wobbling'. This creates a wide contact surface, which allows you to get through the softest parts much more easily, without noticeably higher rolling resistance on the harder sand. The outer width of the rim is 40.0mm, which allows the most commonly used beach tires to fit optimally, which benefits aerodynamics and therefore speed.

During the 'summer beach race' in Camperduin, the prototype could be really put through its paces for the first time.

Height.
But for a faster beach wheel set, the height is of course also important! The height is, just like the width, optimized to go perfectly with the most commonly used beach tires. For example, the first design of the rim was 50mm high, but in combination with beach tires, a height of around 106mm would be created, a bit too much of a good thing.. Especially with crosswind. That is why a 42mm high design was chosen.

Furthermore, the rim is built with a flat rim edge and therefore does not have the traditional 'hook' to clamp the tire (hookless design). This also ensures that the wheels can easily be made tubeless. The rim is also dimensioned against the outer limit of the ETRTO and the rim bed has 2 raised edges to support the tire. Which ensures that the tire remains firmly on the rim, even with low pressure.

The rim has also "naturally" been given the 9th Wave signature: The Asymmetric shape. The asymmetric shape allows for better quality wheels to be built with a minimal difference in spoke tension between the left and right sides of the wheels. This benefits the build quality of the wheels and ultimately also the driving characteristics. Contact us for the current stock in various color options....
