Traction. Flow. Freedom. Huna, the 32 Inch Gravel Bike.

- Auto translated text from Dutch -

The Huna is built for long days in the saddle, carrying speed and maintaining maximum control across changing terrain. Its 32-inch wheels roll more easily over obstacles, preserve momentum and provide extra stability on gravel, sand and rough surfaces.

The geometry was developed from the ground up around the larger wheel size, combining a calm, stable ride with the direct and responsive feel of a fast gravel bike. Wide tyres, plenty of comfort and a setup designed for long distances make the Huna a bike that truly comes into its own as the ride gets longer and the terrain gets rougher.

From fast gravel rides and long stretches of beach to ultra-distance racing and bikepacking, the Huna is built to keep covering miles.

Testing, testing and more testing.

You don’t build a 32-inch gravel bike by simply scaling up an existing frame. The larger wheel diameter affects almost everything: geometry, riding position, centre of gravity, handling and the overall balance of the bike.

We soon discovered that our existing 29er Moana fork offered just enough clearance for a 32-inch wheel. Ideal for quickly getting the first test rides in and validating the concept, but far from ideal as a final solution.

Being first was never the goal with this project. We only wanted to move forward once the bike truly felt right, had been thoroughly tested and refined until every part of the package worked together.

That’s why we didn’t start by endlessly calculating everything on paper. We started by riding off-road. We built several prototypes and even cut two existing Makai frames in half.

Painful, but necessary to test different geometries in real-world conditions. For the wheels, we immediately chose lightweight carbon prototypes as well, so we could experience from the very beginning how a true 32-inch setup behaves.

The biggest challenge was making the most of the larger wheels without making the bike itself too tall. If you simply extend the frame and fit bigger wheels, the rider ends up sitting too far off the ground and the centre of gravity changes. That meant the bottom bracket position, front end, rear triangle and overall balance of the frame all had to be completely reconsidered.

After the final geometry adjustments, we created a fully 3D-printed model to check fit and fine details.

The ultimate test? BKRS Bound XL. Bike Team rider Raphael rode 560 kilometres non-stop on one of the prototypes.

Prototype after prototype, we moved further and further away from the original Makai geometry. In the end, so much had changed that this was no longer a Makai with bigger wheels, but an entirely new platform.

And after 18 months of testing, it deserved a new name too: Huna.

Fast, comfortable and built for long days

A fast bike doesn’t have to be extremely low at the front or uncomfortable. Just like the Makai, the Huna’s geometry has been developed so you can maintain an efficient, aerodynamic riding position for longer.

The balanced stack and reach create a natural position on the bike without the need for a large stack of spacers. This gives you more comfort and control on long rides, while still keeping you compact and efficient on the bike.

Despite its large 32-inch wheels, the Huna remains remarkably light and lively to ride. It combines speed, comfort and stability in a riding position designed to be maintained for hours.

Tire Clearance

The Huna was developed around wide tires with generous clearance around them. Not only for extra grip and comfort, but also for those days when gravel turns into the infamous “peanut-butter mud” seen in races like Unbound.

At the moment, there are no dedicated beach tires available. During the launch, however, you can choose between the Schwalbe G-One RS 50 mm, RS 55 mm or Rick Pro 2.4” (approx. 62 mm). This lets you choose between speed, extra volume or maximum grip, while still maintaining plenty of clearance around the tire.

Just a Normal Drivetrain

The 32-inch wheels place different demands on the drivetrain. Even so, we didn’t want the Huna to require an unconventional mountain bike crank, an extreme Q-factor or any special components. It had to ride and shift just like a modern high-end gravel bike.

That’s why the frame was developed around a standard gravel crank and non-Boost chainline, while still leaving enough room for wide tires and a short rear end.

The result is an efficient chainline, standard components that are available almost anywhere in the world, and clearance for a chainring of up to 50 teeth. Ideal for those who really want to push the speed.

The wheelset, carbon from day one.

From the very first prototype, the Huna was tested with specially made, lightweight 32” carbon wheels. The first version still used a shallow rim, purely to properly evaluate the bike’s handling and geometry.

The transition from 26-inch to 29-inch wheels was far from perfect. We didn’t want to test the concept on an unnecessarily heavy bike — we wanted to experience the intended ride feel from the very beginning.

That’s why we continued developing the wheelset specifically for the Huna. To increase stiffness and improve aerodynamics, we worked together with 9thWave to develop a 52 mm deep, asymmetric carbon rim. The fundamentals remain familiar: 37 mm internal width, non-Boost and 28 spokes for additional stiffness.

This way, the frame, geometry and wheelset were developed together as one complete system from the very beginning.

Please note: the photos show one of our test wheelsets. The final version has the same rim shape, but features updated decals.

A New Face in the Family

For the Storm Makai, we introduced a distinct visual identity for the bike for the first time: a mask with a character of its own.

For the Huna, we continued that design language. The new mask clearly belongs to the same family, but has its own personality. Where Makai represents the wild ocean, movement and speed, Huna is about what lies beneath the surface: inner strength and wisdom.

The name Huna also holds a special place within the Storm team. It was once the internal project name for the Makai, before that bike received its final name. With the new 32-inch Huna, the name now finally takes its place within the family — a subtle reference to where this gravel and beach story first began.

That connection is also reflected in the design. The letter H once again forms a recognisable part of the face, but on the Huna it takes on a new shape and meaning.

The name Huna comes from Hawaiian and can mean “hidden” or “secret”. A fitting name for a bike that truly reveals what it is capable of when the terrain gets rougher and the distance gets longer.

UDH

Universal Derailleur Hanger — or simply, a universal derailleur hanger. The Storm Makai frame was specifically developed around the latest hanger standard. The main advantage? This hanger is widely available and extremely strong. Thanks to this innovative design, SRAM drivetrains can even eliminate the hanger altogether.

But there’s more. In the event of an impact, the hanger can rotate out of the way to help prevent damage to both the derailleur and the frame. The design also contributes to smoother and more precise shifting performance.

This makes our 32-inch carbon gravel frame compatible with current and future drivetrain systems.

Details

Just like with the Makai, we approached the Huna with care and attention from the very beginning, and we only release the frame once everything is exactly right. A good example is the unique fork, which is closed on one side. This not only makes the bike slightly faster, but also gives it a clean and distinctive look. Depending on your preference, you can choose between 140 mm and 160 mm brake rotors.

The frame uses a round 27.2 mm seatpost with a conventional clamp, which is better suited to harsh conditions involving salt and sand. There is also the option to fit a dropper post.

Another smart detail has been added as well: a small drainage hole at the bottom of the frame, allowing any water to escape easily.

And hard to miss: the frame has mounting points for four bottle cages, with additional space for a top tube bag. The bike shown here is fitted with aero bottles for maximum speed, but larger bottles fit easily too.

Geometry

The Huna isn’t a bike you simply choose based on a size chart. Every rider is personally measured at Beukers Bike Centre using an Essential Bikefit from Perfect Bikefit, so the frame size and setup are determined as one complete package.

With 32-inch wheels, toe clearance also plays an important role. Because of the larger wheel diameter, the front tire comes closer to the rider’s foot when steering. The Huna’s geometry has therefore been developed to maintain sufficient clearance between the shoe and front tire, without compromising handling or riding position. Ideal for technical courses.

At launch, the Storm Huna is available only in size L/XL. This is the size in which the benefits of 32-inch wheels come into their own most clearly.
